ChatGPT has no idea what "cool" means. "Something" is vague. It just guesses.
Good prompt: "Write a 300-word LinkedIn post about email marketing ROI. Target: B2B SaaS founders. Tone: Conversational and data-driven."
Now ChatGPT knows exactly what to do.
The rule: The clearer your prompt, the better your result.
Three Essential Ingredients
Every good prompt has these three things:
1. Context (What's the situation?)
Give background information. What problem are you solving?
Example: "I'm launching a new product and need to explain it to investors."
2. Task (What do you want done?)
Be specific about the output.
Example: "Write a 2-minute pitch that covers: problem, solution, market size, and ask."
3. Format (How should it look?)
Specify style, length, structure.

Common Beginner Mistakes
Mistake 1: Being Too Polite
"Would you mind possibly writing a short email if you have time?"
Too tentative. AI doesn't need courtesy.
Better: "Write a short email to prospects."
Mistake 2: Assuming Context
"How do I improve it?"
What is "it"? ChatGPT doesn't know what you're referring to.
Better: "I wrote a job description for a Senior Designer role. How can I improve it to attract more qualified applicants?"
Mistake 3: No Format Specifications
"Tell me about marketing"
Marketing is huge. You'll get a confused ramble.
Better: "Give me 5 specific marketing tactics for B2B SaaS companies. Format as a numbered list with short descriptions."
Mistake 4: Unclear Goals
"Help me with copywriting"
Copywriting for what? An email? An ad? A landing page?
Better: "Write subject lines for a welcome email series. I want to hook new users and get them to activate. Include 10 options."
Your First Prompt
Try this formula:
"Write [what] for [who]. Keep it [how long]. Make it sound [tone]. Include [specifics]."
Fill in the blanks:
- Write: Blog post, email, product description, social post
- For: Audience (SaaS founders, teenagers, busy professionals)
- Keep it: 100 words, 2 paragraphs, one page
- Sound: Professional, casual, funny, authoritative
- Include: Specific points or style elements
Example: "Write a Twitter thread for startup founders about common fundraising mistakes. Keep it to 5 tweets. Make it sound helpful and direct. Include 1-2 statistics."
Done. That's a solid prompt.
Five-Day Practice Challenge
Day 1: Write 3 prompts about something you know. Compare results.
Day 2: Rewrite one of yesterday's prompts with more detail. See if results improve.
Day 3: Deliberately write a vague prompt, then an excellent one. Notice the difference.

Troubleshooting: When Your Results Don't Match What You Expected
The most common problem beginners face: "The AI didn't do what I asked."
